Local history & ski museum in Saalbach Hinterglemm
Must-visit in any weather
The long and illustrious history of Saalbach Hinterglemm is often forgotten when looking at today’s idyllic, yet extensively developed tourist-friendly resort with its huge ski region, lovely hiking and biking offers. In fact, this region’s exciting past can be felt in every corner, and the Heimathaus local museum with the Saalbach Ski Museum present this as well as the very interesting development of alpine skiing in the region.
In 1994, the municipality bought the so-called Steinachhäusl, the former auxiliary building of an old farmhouse dating back to 1698, dismantled it, and rebuilt it true to the original next to the Heimathaus local museum. Since then, it has been home to Saalbach’s skiing history. More than 200 exhibits are dedicated to the alpine revolution, which began in this once forgotten tributary valley as early as 1898. Early skis and ski-models, the development of the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, and state-of-the-art equipment are exhibited here. There is also a look back at the Alpine World Ski Championships that were held in Saalbach Hinterglemm in 1991, and which will return to the Home of Lässig in 2025.
The first mountain farmers settled here in as early as 1222, the church was built in 1410 and the first market was held in 1489. The region has grown steadily ever since, and this museum in Saalbach is dedicated to its illustrious history. An old farmhouse dating back to 1350, which was also rebuilt on this site and opened as the “Österreicherhaus” (“Austrian House”) during the 1991 Alpine World Ski Championships, is now dedicated to Saalbach’s history and development. The permanent exhibition on the top floor is dedicated to old religious and agricultural artefacts, antique craft utensils and early views of the area. Furthermore, the development of the tourist region can also be wonderfully traced here. The first floor is home to seasonal exhibitions by regional artists.
The Heimathaus & Skimuseum museums in Saalbach Hinterglemm are really worth a visit, and not just when it is raining. The Thurnerhof team has lots more suggestions to help ensure you have a brilliant holiday!
