Exciting things to see and do around Salzburg

The best excursions of the Salzburger land region

The Saalbach Hinterglemm holiday region is full of wonderful experiences and adventures, activities and sights. However, there is so much more in the surrounding area that absolutely needs to be seen and experienced. Numerous things to do around Salzburg for all of the family invites you to explore all aspects of the province with its world-famous capital, the Mozart city of Salzburg. You don’t know where to start? Well, we have gathered a few suggestions for you.

Animal adventures

Many animal species, on land and in the water, on the mountains and in the valleys, call the province of Salzburg their home. Numerous excursion destinations are dedicated to them, including:

  • Wildlife park Ferleiten: More than 200 animals native to the Alps live on more than 15 hectares. The adjoining leisure park is also great fun, especially for children.
  • Wildlife park Untertauern: Another, somewhat smaller, wildlife and leisure park with open-air enclosures invites you to enjoy exciting animal observations, as well as great play opportunities for the young and young-at-heart.
  • Reptile zoo Nockalm: The fascinating world of venomous snakes and reptiles is given a spectacular showplace here – at a respectful distance, of course.
  • Wildgehege (game enclosure) Kleefeld: In Strobl, you can take a look behind the scenes of this home for red and fallow deer on a guided tour.

Pure nature experiences

The power of nature is not just visible in the diverse animal world, but also in the countless natural monuments which skilfully capture the beauty and spirit of the province of Salzburg:

  • Krimml Waterfalls: Europe’s highest waterfalls, with a drop height of 380 metres, create not just a healthy, healing climate, but are also there for you to explore by climbing up the hiking path. A visit to the exhibition “Krimmler WasserWelten” (“Krimml Worlds of Water”) is an absolute must.
  • Sigmund Thun Klamm gorge: Feel the power of the water up-close in Water. The Kapruner Ache has carved its way through the rock over millennia.
  • Salzachöfen gorge: The wildly romantic Dachstein limestone gorge between the Hagengebirge and Tennengebirge mountains in Golling is the home of a true adventure gorge with action and adventure for the young and the young-at-heart.
  • Kaprun high mountain reservoirs: There are many lovely mountain lakes, but this body of water, created by a dam, combines natural beauty with impressive technology. A walk over the dam gives an impression of the sheer power of nature.

Fortresses and castles around Salzburg

In addition to the world-famous Hohensalzburg Fortress in the city of Mozart, there are many other castles and fortresses in the province of Salzburg which combine history with modernity:

  • Hohenwerfen: Falconry makes a visit to this fortress extra special. Flight displays with trained birds-of-prey are among the highlights of this medieval complex, which is the venue for lively festivals and exciting concerts, especially in the summer.
  • Schloss Goldegg: This 12th century complex is primarily known as a seminar and conference location. However, the interesting Pongau local history museum is also located here.
  • Klammstein: This 800-year-old castle, which was once of great political and economic importance, stands at the entrance to the Gastein Valley. Careful renovation work has brought the castle and museum to life today.
  • Mauterndorf: Experience the Middle Ages up-close and in an extra family-friendly way on the former site of a 4th century Roman fort - it is definitely one of the loveliest excursion destinations for children in the province of Salzburg.

But wait, there's more!

Of course, this is not nearly everything that the province of Salzburg has to offer. How about:

  • Schafbergbahn: Some excursion trains are small highlights in their own right. The trip from St. Wolfgang to Schafberg (1,783 metres above sea-level) with the cogwheel steam locomotive offers amazing views of the vast Salzkammergut.
  • Lake Zell: One of the loveliest and clearest lakes in the whole province invites you to cool down and sunbathe on one of the many dedicated areas. A short boat trip is also not to be missed.
  • Hohe Tauern National Park: One of Europe’s most important national parks invites you to discover the beauty of nature, hiking action, trekking journeys and cultural highlights.
  • Fantasiana: The adventure park in Strasswalchen in Salzburg's northern Flachgau region is ideal for children and teenagers alike. Eight themed areas, a rollercoaster and a giant waterslide invite you to go on unique adventures!

Family-friendly adventures, exciting activities for groups, and countless moments of enjoyment for couples are just some of the many things to do in Salzburg that await you around the Thurnerhof. We would be delighted to receive your non-binding enquiry about a magical summer holiday in the province of Salzburg.
